Legend has it that a Chilean artist named Mario Irarrázaal created this sculpture out of iron in cement in the late 1980s. In March of 1992, a local booster organization known as Corporación Pro Antofagasta, a local booster organization, inaugurated the sculpture as an official work of art, to represent their region. Since then, recognition of the sculpture has made it a popular destination for all types of curious travelers.
